چکیده

We consider the problem of coding labeled trees by means of strings of node labels and we present a unified approach based on a reduction of both coding and decoding to integer (radix) sorting. Applying this approach to four well-known codes introduced by Prüfer [18], Neville [17], and Deo and Micikevicius [5], we close some open problems. With respect to coding, our general sequential algorithm requires optimal linear time, thus solving the problem of optimally computing the second code presented by Neville. The algorithm can be parallelized on the EREW PRAM model, so as to work in O(log n) time using O(n) or O(n √ log n) operations, depending on the code. With respect to decoding, the problem of finding an optimal sequential algorithm for the second Neville code was also open, and our general scheme solves it. Furthermore, in a parallel setting our scheme yields the first efficient decoding algorithms for the codes in [5] and [17].

On coding labeled trees

We consider the problem of coding labeled trees by means of strings of node labels. Different codes have been introduced in the literature by Prüfer, Neville, and Deo and Micikevičius. For all of them, we show that both coding and decoding can be reduced to integer (radix) sorting, closing several open problems within a unified framework that can be applied both in a sequential and in a paralle...

A Unified Approach for Design of Lp Polynomial Algorithms

By summarizing Khachiyan's algorithm and Karmarkar's algorithm forlinear program (LP) a unified methodology for the design of polynomial-time algorithms for LP is presented in this paper. A key concept is the so-called extended binary search (EBS) algorithm introduced by the author. It is used as a unified model to analyze the complexities of the existing modem LP algorithms and possibly, help ...

An Empirical Comparison of Performance of the Unified Approach to Linearization of Variance Estimation after Imputation with Some Other Methods

Imputation is one of the most common methods to reduce item non_response effects. Imputation results in a complete data set, and then it is possible to use naϊve estimators. After using most of common imputation methods, mean and total (imputation estimators) are still unbiased. However their variances (imputation variances) are underestimated by naϊve variance estimators. Sampling mechanism an...

A unified theoretical harmonic analysis approach to the cyclic wavelet transform (CWT) for periodic signals of prime dimensions

The article introduces cyclic dilation groups and finite affine groups for prime integers, and  as an application of this theory it presents a unified group theoretical approach for the  cyclic wavelet transform (CWT) of prime dimensional periodic signals.

A numerical approach for variable-order fractional unified chaotic systems with time-delay

This paper proposes a new computational scheme for approximating variable-order fractional integral operators by means of finite element scheme. This strategy is extended to approximate the solution of a class of variable-order fractional nonlinear systems with time-delay. Numerical simulations are analyzed in the perspective of the mean absolute error and experimental convergence order. To ill...
